Ice Season Startup and Why Patience Still Matters on Early Ice
By Reid Miller | Ben's Marine
Ice fishing season is starting to show its first real signs across northern Minnesota and anglers everywhere are itching to get after it. I completely understand the anticipation. Fresh ice, quiet shorelines and that first drop on a brand new hole is what we all look forward to. These early days demand calm decision making though because the ice is still going through its first big test.
Across Lake Winnibigoshish and Leech Lake we are hearing consistent thickness reports in the 6 to 8 inch range. Some resorts have announced that they will allow walking traffic and lightweight ATV use this weekend. That is great news, but keep in mind that these green light notices only apply to select access points and specific travel routes. Ice is not uniform and never will be.
In the Grand Rapids area, anglers are already fishing a few of the smaller protected lakes. Those shallow back bay type waters are always the first to set up. Anything deep or wind exposed is behind schedule and still needs more time. If a lake is not locked in completely, count it out. Early mobility is tempting, but the ice wins every argument if you rush it.

Lake of the Woods Ice Rescue Reminder
If anyone needs a reminder of how quickly early ice can turn, Lake of the Woods provided a strong one this week. On December 4, the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Department was called to rescue an angler who walked out from Graceton Beach. The ice looked safe at first glance. Soon after, strong south winds broke the sheet free and he drifted north into open water. The Sheriff’s team used its heavy air boat to bring him back safely.
That is exactly how fast conditions can flip. The ice did not crack under him. It simply detached and moved. When we talk about unseen risk, this is it.
Safety Will Always Outfish Urgency
Every year the first push of early ice produces a wave of excitement. It is easy to convince yourself that a hot walleye bite is worth beating the calendar. I fish as much as anyone, but there is no world where an early limit is worth a dangerous crossing.
Your family wants you home after the bite, not headlining a rescue report.
If the ice needs a week to tighten up, give it a week. Let the wind settle. Let the cold finish the job. When the season truly locks in, the bite turns reliable anyway and you will enjoy it with full confidence.
