Ben's Rant: Quit Upgrading Your LiveScope Backwards

I get the same phone call every week. Somebody drops close to two grand on a new LiveScope transducer, bolts it on, fires it up, and the picture looks almost the same as their old one. They call thinking Garmin sold them a dud. Garmin didn't sell them a dud. They just upgraded the wrong part first.

Here's the thing nobody explains at the counter. Your transducer is not the brain of your live sonar setup. Your head unit is. The transducer sends the signal. Your chartplotter has to process it, build the picture, and put it on screen quickly enough that you can react to a fish before it swims off. If that processor is maxed out, a great transducer still gets capped at what the screen can push.

Think of it like buying a $2,000 monitor and plugging it into a $200 computer. The monitor can display more, but the computer can't feed it enough to use any of that extra ability. You paid for headroom you can't touch.

The Processing Gap

Garmin's GPSMAP 9000 series runs on a processor that runs seven times the speed of the older 8000 series and x3 series. That's not a rounding error. That's a different tier of hardware entirely. The 9000 series was also built with native LiveScope Plus support baked in from the factory, so it's already set up to push more of what the transducer can give it.

An Echomap unit, an x3 unit, or an older 8000 series display can all run LiveScope Plus or LiveScope 2. Garmin allows it. Allowed and optimized are two different things. Those displays hit their processing ceiling before the transducer hits its own ceiling. You end up watching the head unit struggle, not the sonar.

Why Your "Upgrade" Looked the Same

This is the part that gets people. If you had LiveScope Plus on an older display and switched to LiveScope 2, and it looked close to identical, that's not a defective unit. Both transducers were maxing out the same underpowered processor. You weren't seeing what LiveScope Plus can do or what LiveScope 2 can do. You were seeing what your head unit could handle, full stop.

Put those same two transducers on a GPSMAP 9000 and the story changes in a hurry. Run LiveScope Plus next to LiveScope 2 or LiveScope 2 HD on a 9000 series display and the separation between them opens right up. More detail, tighter target separation, less noise chewing up the picture. Put that same LiveScope Plus transducer on an Echomap and then on a GPSMAP 9000 side by side and you'll wonder if it's the same transducer.

Size DOES Matter

Just not the way you'd guess.

People assume a bigger, newer transducer is the fix. Bigger housing, newer generation, more elements, so the picture should come out better whatever it's hooked up to. LiveScope Plus, LiveScope 2, and LiveScope 2 HD are all serious pieces of hardware. But the transducer isn't the size that decides your picture. Your processor is.

A small processor can only handle so much, regardless of what you plug into it. That's the whole story. Screen size doesn't fix it either. A big, beautiful 12-inch display with an underpowered chip is still an underpowered chip. Size counts here, just not the size you were staring at when you swiped your card.

Sticker Shock

Here's where people get burned on money, not just on what shows up on screen.

A standalone LiveScope 2 or LiveScope 2 HD transducer runs $1,999.99 to $2,199.99. That's serious money for a transducer by itself.

A GPSMAP 9010, the entry point into the 9000 series that can use everything that transducer offers, starts at $3,199.99. Step up to the 13-inch GPSMAP 9213 and you're in $4,499.99 to $4,999.99 territory.

Now compare that to an ECHOMAP UHD2 93sv bundled with LiveScope Plus, which runs $2,999.98 to $3,099.98 for the display and transducer together. That bundle costs less than a standalone LiveScope 2 transducer by itself, and it will still hit its processing ceiling faster than a 9000 series setup would.

Do the math before you buy. Two grand on a new transducer for a display that already caps out is two grand that would have gone further toward the head unit instead.

The Order That Works

If you want a better LiveScope picture, work in this order.

  1. Upgrade your head unit first. This is where the ceiling lives. A GPSMAP 9000 series display gives your transducer room to do its job.
  2. Then upgrade the transducer. Once the processor can keep up, moving from LiveScope Plus to LiveScope 2 or LiveScope 2 HD shows up on screen.
  3. Don't skip step one and expect step two to fix it. A bigger, newer transducer on a tired processor is still capped by that processor.

This isn't a Garmin sales pitch. Humminbird and Lowrance have the same relationship between their head units and their forward-facing sonar. The display drives the ceiling on every brand. Garmin's just the one I get asked about the most, because it's what most of our LiveScope customers around Mille Lacs, the Whitefish Chain, and Red Lake are already running.

Bottom Line

If your LiveScope picture never impressed you, don't write off the technology. Check what's driving it first. A GPSMAP 9000 series display paired with LiveScope Plus will usually beat an Echomap or 8000 series display paired with LiveScope 2. The processor decides how much of that transducer you get to see.

Should I upgrade my head unit or my transducer first?

Head unit first. It sets the ceiling for how much detail you can see, regardless of which transducer you're running.

Will LiveScope 2 work on my Echomap or 8000 series display?

In most cases, yes, it will run. It just won't show the full gap in performance over LiveScope Plus, because the display's processor is the limiting factor, not the transducer.

Is LiveScope Plus still worth buying?

On a GPSMAP 9000 series display, absolutely. Paired with the extra processing power, LiveScope Plus still puts out a strong picture. The transducer isn't the outdated part. The display it's paired with might be.

What's the difference between LiveScope Plus and LiveScope 2 HD on a GPSMAP 9000?

Noticeable. More detail at close range, tighter target separation, and less shake in the picture. On an underpowered display, that same gap almost disappears.
